NEWS: Fatal head-on collision in Cookstown

A tragic collision involving a passenger vehicle and a transport truck claimed the life of an 82-year-old Newmarket resident last night in Essa Township.

Emergency crews and Nottawasaga OPP responded to the crash on Highway 89, west of Cookstown, between the 8th and 9th Lines, at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 14.

According to an OPP news release, the crash occurred when the two vehicles, traveling in opposite directions on Highway 89, collided head-on. The driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The transport truck driver was unharmed.

The highway was closed for several hours while the OPP's Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) team investigated and processed the scene. It reopened at 3:02 a.m.

The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are asking anyone with information or dash-cam footage from the area between 8 p.m. and 8:32 p.m. to contact Nottawasaga OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
