In a study published in the Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine, CJEM2005; 7(5):309-314, two Alberta tertiary emergency departments received 287 cases of children under 16 years of age who were bitten by dogs. The study ran between 1998 and 2002. The mean age of the victims was 7.4 years. The child’s face was bitten 58.5% of the time. Bites categorized as “severe” occurred in 25.1% of cases. Admitted to hospital occurred in 15.3% of cases and required a total of 144 days of inpatient care.

TRIAL: On November 2012, Darcy Romaine took a case to trial involving a child who was viciously attacked and bitten on the face and neck. Jones v. Jocko Newmarket, (21 November 2012) Newmarket, CV-08-088760-00 (O.N. Sup. Ct.). The Court awarded $920,000, of which $140,000 was in recognition of the young boy’s pain and suffering, and the bulk thereafter was in recognition of his changed employment prospects and future care needs. This is the highest award for pain and suffering yet recognized by a Superior Court Judge for a dog bite victim.
